Eat with the seasons

A couple of weeks ago, on a Healthy Grocery Workshop as I was taking about seasonal produce , I paused and thought what is it that makes me believe, seasonal eating is the best for my family.

In my opinion; thinking outside of the box and eating with the seasons allows our body to try a variety of new, nourishing ingredients. Intuitively and over generations (before cold storage), we all ate what was in season. My five reasons why we should all try and eat in-season produce:

  1. Nature is smart; it has designed the right foods with the right nutrients for the season. Seasonal eating gives body what the nature intends to give at that time for the year like cucumbers, water melons are cooling for the summer, fall and winter vegetables become heavier like squashes and turnips.
  2. Easy on the wallet- in season abundance makes the produce comparatively less expensive
  3. It has the more flavor, nutrition and adds variety to our diet.
  4. Seasonal eating reduces our impact on the planet (limited refrigeration and transportation required)
  5. It forces us to be creative and have some fun in the kitchen experimenting with new vegetables and fruits.

In all seasons, be creative! Let the natural backdrop of spring, summer, fall and winter be your guide.
